âYou know, Kai, heavenâs not too far away.â Opieâs nana could see all the questions running through his eyes. She could feel his anger and his hate for a world which would always try to break even the strongest.
âHow can any of this be right?â he asked her.
âLifeâs not meant to be right, Kai. Death is always the only certain outcome we have. She gave you to me and I gave you life. Now, even though you have to watch it leave my eyes, I know that you and Kingsley will find a new life here inside the place that held you two and it will again, and it will be for an eternity. I get to go home, Kai, into your grandfatherâs arms and guide you from the heavens.â Kingsley stood next to Ax, watching Opie with his grandmother, her arms wrapped tight around her body. Ax could feel the anger and sadness flow from her pores. It was intoxicating. She was intoxicating.
âDid you love him?â Ax asked Kingsley. Her eyes never left Opieâs body. She burned her green orbs into him like she had x-ray vision and was trying to see inside the man that came back dressed in leather with ghosts biting at his heels.
âYes,â she whispers.
âHow much?â
âDoes it matter?â
âWhy does it not?â Ax raised his eyebrow as she turned and looked him up and down. He saw her thoughts inside her eyes. Ax was huge, covered in tattoos, had a scar that ran down the right-hand side of his face, over his eye and down curling over his lip and stopped just under his chin. Glass shard used as a blade from a father who beat him far more than he hugged him.
âBecause it wasnât enough to make him stay,â she answered, her eyes settled on Axâs lips and his lip ring.
âOh but it was.â
Her shocked eyes snap to his. She studied his face and he tilted his head studying her right back. âHave you ever asked him?â
âNo.â She licked her lips. âNo, I havenât.â Ax had hit a nerve. He heard it in her hushed tone. He could see why Opie loved her. She was fucking insanely intoxicating. She smelled like rain and vanilla.
âExactly. See, pain turns into self-righteous bullshit and truths get blurred. I bet if you ask him, he will say he loved you that much that leaving was far harder than staying.â There was no doubt in Axâs mind that Opie would in fact let her know when she was ready to hear him. To sit with a little patience and listen that he would show her just how hard it was and still is. He thought he deserved to be alone for sins from his hands and blood that drips from shaky fingertips, but he doesnât.
âIâm Ax, by the way.â He placed his hand out toward her. Her green eyes, so stunning, snapped from his outstretched hand to his dark navy-blue eyes that held yellow flecks. Her intense glare and eye color that changed before him took Axâs breath away.
